He studied under Dr. Samuel Johnson and the two later became close. He gained widespread recognition with his appearance in the title role of Shakespeare's \"Richard III\", which earned him a position at the Theater Royal, Drury Lane in the West End. He would go on to buy a share of the theatre and manage it for the next 29 years. Under his management, the Drury Lane would become one of the leading theatres in Europe.
