William Shakespeare. The Players' Shakespeare. London: [Ernest Benn], 1923-1927. Players' Shakespeare edition, from the library of actor Sir John Gielgud, who famously took a stint at the Old Vic to perform in a number of Shakespeare plays, with his ownership signatures or presentation inscription; The Merchant of Venice with a number of marginal pencil notes (since erased). Six volumes (of seven, lacking Macbeth); quarto. Publisher's quarter-cloth over gray paper-covered boards; spines lettered in black; page edges untrimmed. General shelfwear; some covers lightly soiled or dulled; some backstrips browned with some minor splashes toward the bottom edge. Light discoloration to endpapers. Very good. Housed in custom clamshell cases. From a Private Collection in St. Charles, IL.
