The fourth quarto edition (the others being 1594, 1600, and 1611: included of course in the four folios, the last of which appeared two years before the present edition, making this the 8th edition overall), the first in which the Dramatis personae, or 'The Persons Names', are listed. 'In this edition, the signature on leaf B2 lines up with the spaces between \"brought\" and \"to\" and \"to\" and Rome,\" in the line above and on leaf B3, the \"B\" of the signature is under the space between \"here\" and \"my\" in the line above. In another edition, the signature on leaf B2 is shifted slightly to the left of the spaces between \"brought\" and \"to\" and \"to\" and Rome,\" in the line above and on leaf B3, the \"B\" of the signature is under the \"er\" of \"here\" in the line above'. ESTC records only 3 copies thus, Birmingham Central, EUL, Boston Public. The other variant is recorded in 14 copies in the UK, 8 of them in Oxford libraries; of the 18 in the US, 9 are in the Folger. Provenance: Richard Montgomery Gilchrist Potter, 1898-1941, book collector, the first bibliographer of Rupert Brooke. Marie Luise Hinrichs, who acquired the volume c. 1945 (a pencil note on the rear fly-leaf may mark the acquisition, or the date of the binding). Purchased from Jonathan Bate (but without mark of ownership). Jonathan Bate edited Titus Andronicus for The Arden Shakespeare, from whose Introduction we quote: 'Shakespeare's earliest and bloodiest tragedy has had a curious history. It was hugely successful in its own time - indeed, it perhaps did more than any other play to establish its author's reputation as a dramatist - but it has been reviled by critics and revived infrequently. Yet on the few occasions when it has reappeared in the repertory it has repeated its original success . The play is deeply Shakespearean . one of the dramatist's most inventive plays, a complex and self-conscious improvisation upon classical sources, most notably the Metamorphosis of Ovid': and see the Adaptations section of the same for a detailed consideration of the present edition, including the definite and interesting excellencies of it.
