Popular variety as are all overdate and off-metal issues of the war years.  The 1944 D/S was only discovered about thirty years ago.  There are two varieties: The more common Variety 2 has the S under the D and virtually obliterated by it.  The present example is of the much scarcer Variety 1, with the S extending over the D.
