Although certified as a proof by NGC, Snow-3 is associated with original business strikes coined in 1856 as presentation pieces to Washington office holders. Most high grade pieces are Snow-9 restrikes made in proof format circa-1859 for sale to collectors. A majority of circulated examples are Snow-3 business issues spent by non-collector recipients. In recent years, both NGC and PCGS have certified nearly all submissions of 1856 Flying Eagle cents as proofs. This chocolate-brown specimen is spot-free but has a minor obverse rim ding at 5:30 and a number of faint pinscratches on the devices. One slender scratch is above the NE in ONE.
