[Paris, ca. 1250.] Manuscript leaf on fine uterine vellum. 6.25" x 4.25". Text in two columns, heading and chapter numbers in alternating red and blue ink. A leaf from the book of John, containing part of chapter 13, all of 14 and 15, and the beginning of chapter 16. It contains key Christian teachings, with Jesus preparing his disciples for his crucifixion, including "Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me;" the vine and the branches; the world will hate the disciples; promise of the Holy Spirit; “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me," and more. One side bears an early marginal note, translating "If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love."
