(SHAKESPEARE, William.) COWDEN CLARKE, Mary.. The Complete Concordance to Shakespeare. First edition, signed by the author at the end of her preface, and an attractively bound copy, of this painstaking concordance to Shakespeare by author Mary Cowden Clarke (1809-98). The eldest daughter of Vincent Novello, Mary in 1828 married teacher and literary scholar Charles Cowden Clarke (the man who introduced Keats to Chapman’s Homer). She soon began work on her Shakespeare concordance, issued in 18 monthly parts 1844-5, and then The Complete Concordance in book form as here. Cowden Clarke’s achievement superseded the previous Copious Index to Shakespeare (1790) of Samuel Ayscough and the Complete Verval Index (1805-07) of Francis Twiss.
