Timon of Athens.  From the First Folio.  1623.
First Printing.  Complete.

Provenance:  From John Wolfson's copy of the First Folio, which Wolfson had replaced with better preserved leaves from Bernard Quaritch.  The Wolfson Folio is West 173, Lee 128.  Owned in 1789 by Robert Tomkin and subsequently Thomas JamesSerle, Macready's manager who married the sister of the illustrious Mary Cowden Clark.  Serle presented it to Charles and Mary Cowden Clarke on June 7, 1863.  Cowden-Clarke was a meticulous researcher of the entire Shakespeare canon and in xxxx published the monumental Complete Concordance of Shakespeare's works, a text still in great use by scholars, researchers and bardophiles today.

The volume was subsequently given to Frederick Haines, Esq. After which it passed to his daughter Gladys M. Haines from whom it eventually wound up with London bookseller Bernard Quaritch.  The present owner, John Wolfson, purchased it from Quaritch for 2400 pounds sterling on October 6, 1976; Wolfson has in turn stated that upon his death his entire vast collection including the First Folio will pass on to the Globe Theater.

As there were no previous quartos of Timon, the Folio stands as the editio princeps.  it had long been considered a somewhat finished work, but is now understood to be a collaboration with Thomas Middleton who at this time was also writing works for the King's men.
